I just finished reading this and if you are interested in a contemporary theoretical take on the idea of “realm of freedom” and “realm of necessity,” this is a must read. Or as someone said, “if you want to consider yourself a college-educated adult, then you must read this.” The thesis of the book is how the downfall of modern society is the infiltration of the private into the public realm, or the “polis” and our de-emphasis on the action realm. It will really make you question the way our society emphasizes work, to the point where we “live to work.” May not be the typical, light summer read, but it is thought-provoking.

This birthday was a really big deal for me. I think it solidifies all the positive changes I’ve made in my life and the new person I’ve become. At the core, I am still the same ol’ me, I just “came into my own.” I’ve become more confident with who I am, what I want to do, and what I believe and enjoy. My friends and I always laugh about who I was when I first entered my graduate program and who I am today, or even just the difference between today and 6 months ago.

I have amazing, loving friends who I can have deep, intellectual, thought-provoking conversations with. But we can also sit around and talk about how silly our boyfriends can be and have a laugh. They’ve been there every step of the way.

I am with a supportive, confident, intelligent, successful, handsome man, which a year ago, a man with all those attributes would have scared me. And the significant age difference has helped me come to terms with my own age (my family really thought I was going to have a quarter life crisis because I hate getting older).

I have amazing opportunities coming my way. I will be working on a grant-funded project in Los Angeles with my mentor through the California Endowment. We also have two journal articles on the way (and I’m the lead author!). I also will remain in my position at the athletic department, which has taught me so many indescribable lessons, gave me so many laughs, and taught me patience truly is a virtue.

So, here’s to 25 and all it has to offer.
